Did you know that Ralph Lauren was originally named “Ralph Lifschitz”? He switched his last name because he got mocked by some kids in elementary school, due to the second half of his last name sounding like the english word “shit”.
When Lauren was 28 years old he designed ties under the brand Polo Neckwear. He wanted to dress people so that they didn’t seem to look like as they were working at IBM. In other words, he wanted them to suit up. This little business idea became the start of his billion dollar fashion empire.
Ralph Lauren might be considered a self-taught designer, but according to himself he got his inspiration from Esquire, The Duke of Windsor and Cary Grant. Even though he has created one of the world’s most well-known logos, he doesn’t focus too much on brands himself.
